Sunday, March 22: Bejing and Train to Shanghai

Written by Brad Kosegarten
The group headed out bright and early (looking "bright eyed and bushy tailed," according to our guide Melinda) to see our last bit of Bejing before heading south to Shanghai. We took a bus to the Summer Palace, which ironically did not have summer weather. We were all amazed by the 17-arch bridge, the boathouses, and the temples that overlooked the palace grounds. The site was originally built in the 12th century but is known to most Chinese for being sacked in the 1860s in the second Opium War. One group hiked to the top of a Buddhist temple for a panoramic view while another group when to hear a choir sing some traditional songs. Dr. Boarman even shared some nice dance moves with the locals. When finished, the group walked to a nearby restaurant called Aman, where we were treated to yet another wonderful multi-course meal (including duck and scallops). The meal was compliments of Mr. Ho, whose daughter Margaret will be attending Bullis in the fall.  He gave a warm toast to the group, speaking about the value of educators.
The group had no time to linger over desert as we went back to the hotel for an open house for prospective students and families.  We shared a video about Bullis and answered specific questions about our program. We then interviewed prospective students and spoke further with students already committed to Bullis for next year. After gathering our luggage and box dinners (courtesy Michael Liu's mother), we all made it to the train station with time to spare.  We caught up on sleep on the five hour long bullet train ride, ready for a full Shanghai day in the morning.
