Today we got an early start so that we could take a rickshaw tour of an old part of Bejing. The highlight of the tour was a stop at a traditional Chinese household. This home was several small buildings surrounding a central courtyard. The family had several antiques from Chinese dynasties. They were very proud of the Feng Shui of their home. It was built on an axis aligning it with the Forbidden City. This is known as the "back of the dragon."
After our tour, our bus driver fought heavy Bejing traffic to leave the city to tour the Great Wall of China. Because it is a Saturday and the weather is perfect (blue skies and 70 degrees) many Chinese people had the same idea. We visited the Mu Tian Yu section of the wall, located very high up in the mountains and requiring a bus and gondola ride to reach its base. We climbed to the top of the wall and spent two hours exploring. Some sections were very steep with steps and ramps. Along the wall there were a series of fortifications and living quarters that were interesting to investigate. Our day will end with dinner at the Lao She Teahouse and a cultural show.
Our meals were hosted by Ellen Yu's family.
