We arrived in Bejing last night (3/19) in the late afternoon. After checking in to our hotel, we went to a special welcome dinner hosted by the family of Riva, a new student who will be joining the Bullis community in September 2015.
Today was our first full day in Beijing! It most certainly was a full day! We began our Chinese adventure at the Heaven Temple, touring the grounds and learning about the temple where Emperors would make sacrifices to bring a plentiful harvest. We also toured a silk factory and learned all about the process of making silk materials.
After a quick lunch, we walked from Tiananmen Square to the Forbidden City. The sheer vastness of the city and the distance between gates was intimidating and awe inspiring. Every surface was coated in intricate carvings and paintings which were amazingly rendered and detailed. The craftsmanship of these ancient structures was a work to be seen and we had the benefit of seeing the renovation process which will bring the entire grounds back to its original glory.
Dinner this evening was a Peking duck banquet at the Quan Jude restaurant provided by Mr. Yu (parent of 11th grade student Ellen Yu). This prestigious restaurant often hosts heads of government and visiting dignitaries. This meal include some of the most delicate and intricately crafted Chinese delicacies known throughout the country. It was an adventure for every appetite and truly a pleasure!
